Burnt to the ground: Firemen putting out the embers after the blaze that destroyed the shophouse in Carnavon Street.

GEORGE TOWN - A family of five escaped with only the clothes they were wearing after a fire razed their pre-war shophouse in Carnavon Street here.

The owner, who wanted to be known only as Mohd Ali, 38, said he was awakened by heat from the fire at about 4am yesterday.

"I quickly alerted my wife, two children and mother - and we fled the premises. The fire spread so fast that we were unable to save our belongings," he said.

The fire also destroyed a neighbouring shophouse.

A Beach Street Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said firemen managed to extinguish the fire in about an hour.

No casualties were reported and the cause of fire is yet to be determined.
