MUAR - A family reunion on Hari Raya took a turn for the worst when a fire broke out at their house as they were preparing lunch.

Construction worker Ahmad Yassin Rohani, 47, said his family and relatives of about 20 people were in the kitchen when flames broke out around noon at his home along Jalan Muar in Sungai Nibong yesterday.

"I was out at the time but my family members were in the kitchen catching up with each other and cooking when a fire started at the front portion of my home.

"Luckily, all my family members managed to escape unhurt except for my father and brother who sustained minor injuries while attempting to salvage some documents," he said, adding that his father Rohani Watim, 87, and brother Mahmud, 49, were sent to the Muar hospital for treatment.

"We did not expect to face such a horrifying situation but I am thankful that my family members are all safe," he said, adding that he suspected one of the electricity switches in the hall had short-circuited and caused the fire.

Meanwhile, the Fire and Rescue Department's operations commander Saif Abd Rahim said a team of firemen was deployed to the scene after a distress call was received at 12.04pm.

"The occupants escaped unhurt except for two of them who sustained minor injuries, but the house was almost completely burnt down.

"Two cars parked near the house were slightly affected but a motorcycle was destroyed," he said, adding that the cause of the fire was still being investigated.
