PETALING JAYA: The Sungai Buloh prison brawl that resulted in the death of a prisoner was gang-related, said police.
Sungai Buloh OCPD Supt Mohd Rozi Jidin said the fight, which broke out at around 12.30pm on Saturday, was between members of two gangs who had managed to get their hands on sharp weapons.
"We are investigating how they got these weapons," he said.
The dead prisoner, in his 20s, had been involved in a kidnapping case. Two inmates stabbed him in the back with a weapon during the fight.
"We are still waiting for the post-mortem results," Supt Mohd Rozi said.
There was an unconfirmed report from the dead man's lawyer, Gerard Lazarus, that there were several inmates who were killed.
Supt Mohd Rozi, however, clarified that only one casualty was recorded: "Only one death and no others were injured." he said.
Selangor CID chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Adnan Abdullah also refuted the report that there were several other deaths.
"As far as I know, only one person died," he said.
