IPOH - A four-year-old boy is believed to have been abandoned at the Kinta Welfare Department by his father.

Department officer Mohd Mahir Mohd Tahir said the boy, who said his name was Saiful, was brought to the office by a man at about 9am on Thursday.

“The man left the boy at the waiting area and went out on the pretext of answering a phone call.

“When he did not return after about 10 minutes, our staff members became suspicious and went out to search for him, but the man was nowhere to be found,” he said at a press conference at the office yesterday.

Mohd Mahir said department officers then took the boy to the district police station to lodge a report at 10.50am and applied to the magistrate’s court here to place the boy in a shelter temporarily.

“The boy is very well-behaved. When we showed him the CCTV recording of the man who brought him in, he identified the man as his father. But we have not been able to verify his claim.

“He also told us that he has an older brother and younger sister,” he said, adding that Saiful did not seem to have been abused.

Mohd Mahir said the department was checking to ascertain if Saiful had been reported missing.

Anyone with information on the case can contact the department at 05-241 8860 or Mohd Mahir at 019-329 1176.
