Father and son rescued 24 hours after fishing boat capsizes

GEORGE TOWN - Two fishermen were rescued from the waters off Pulau Kendi here, some 24 hours after their boat capsized.

Ong Choo Peen, 54 and his son Ong Chee Wee, 32, who wore life jackets, were found floating in the sea, around 10 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Kendi.

Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) district two enforcement chief First Admiral Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan said the two survivors were tired and very hungry when rescued at around 5pm on Saturday.

He said merchant vessel MV Orkim Merit had spotted the duo and one of its crew members had contacted the MMEA.

"Our team then rushed to the location provided to conduct the search and rescue operation," he said.

The son was found to have minor injuries. The duo we both sent to the Penang Hospital for treatment and observation.
