Fire at workshop destroy 50 bikes, five cars

KUALA LUMPUR - More than 50 motorcycles and five cars were destroyed when the workshop they were placed in were engulfed in flames, in Kerinchi, today.

In the 3.30pm incident, two workshops and a restaurant caught fire causing a Mitsubishi Grandis, Proton Juara, three Honda Accord, and various types of motorcycles to burn.

Pantai Fire and Rescue Department chief Hamid Daud said 33 firemen from the fire station were dispatched to the scene and arrived eight minutes after the distress call.

"By that time, the fire had spread quickly to the 457 metres area, causing the workshops and a restaurant next to it to burn," he said.

Hamid said the firemen managed to control the flame by 4.28pm today, and the forensics were investigating the cause of the fire as well as the total losses.

One of the victims, Dr Shahrudi Sani said the workshops and restaurant were owned by his wife and the siblings since 30 years ago.

"I was at work when she (the wife) called and told me about the fire.

"She said she heard a small explosion before the fire started and she managed to get the family members out of the area," said Shahrudi, adding that seven family members were in the premises at that time.
