Former waiter killed in gas blast

GEORGE TOWN - A 45-year-old man died in a gas explosion at his apartment in Bandar Baru Air Itam here.

The remains of former pub waiter Lee Hooi Hai were found in his bedroom.

His father Lee Thean Huat, 78, said his son had been suffering from depression for the past two years and was on medication.

"He had mentioned that he wanted to take his own life but that was quite long ago.

"He told me there were a lot of problems bothering him but he would not tell me what they were," said the father, adding that he last spoke to his son two weeks ago and had advised him to take his medication regularly.

Hooi Hai's two nieces said their bachelor uncle was an introvert.

It is believed that Lee had turned on the gas stove at his apartment unit on the 16th floor for some time before flicking a lighter, causing the explosion at about 12.30pm yesterday.

The blast shattered the windows of the apartment unit and shards landed on the ground floor, damaging two cars.

Lee's funeral wake will be held at the Khoo Kongsi funeral parlour.

Penang Hospital Forensic Department director Datuk Dr Zahari Noor was also at the scene.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Gan Kong Meng said police have classified the case as sudden death and had ruled out foul play.

In an unrelated case, French tourist Deniec Petripus, 74, fell to his death at a hotel in Tanjung Bungah here on Thursday evening.
