Girl survives fall from escalator

An 18-month-old baby girl was injured after falling off an escalator on the first floor of 1Borneo shopping centre in Kota Kinabalu on Sunday.

The girl was believed to be playing near the escalator and was holding on to the moving handrail.

She was pulled up above the safety barrier before falling off, reported The Star.

She was reported to have fainted after the fall.

A statement from the 1Borneo Hypermall said that the girl, who was unsupervised at that time, was immediately taken to a clinic by the mall staff and subsequently sent to the Likas Women's and Children's Hospital.

Kota Kinabalu city police chief, Assistant Commissioner M. Chandra, said the toddler sustained bruises on her face and is reported to be in stable condition.

"Her eyes, nose and mouth are swollen from the fall but she is in stable condition and is able to cry," he said.

"She was also taken for X-ray scanning but the results are still not ready," he added.

It is not clear where her parents were or what they were doing prior to the incident.
