PETALING JAYA - The plan to hold a Hari Raya gathering at Low Yat Plaza has been given the thumbs up after the brawl that jolted Malaysians last weekend.

Malaysia Shopping Malls Association advisor Joyce Yap said the gathering would be a good move in helping to restore people's confidence in the security at the mall.

Yap, who was a former chairman of Bukit Bintang-KLCC (BBKLCC) Tourism Association, said the plaza in a shopping hub was a central destination for tourists.

"This in itself makes it important for us to promote unity," she said.

On Friday, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the party would discuss with the Federal Territories Ministry to hold the Raya gathering in the mall, known for its range of smartphones and IT gadgets.

The suggestion came about following last weekend's chaos at the mall after a theft of a handphone turned into a brawl.

Retailers have claimed that there was a 40 per cent to 50 per cent drop in sales since then.

Yap said the sales at most other shopping malls in the area remained good despite the melee but the association was supportive of the plan to help Low Yat Plaza.
