JOHOR BARU - Former DAP assemblyman for Bentayan, Gwee Tion Hiang, has filed a RM5mil (S$2 mil)suit in the High Court here against Johor Opposition leader Dr Boo Cheng Hau for defamation and slander.
Gwee accused Dr Boo of committing the offence in several articles published in Chinese, English and Malay language newspapers between 2008 and 2009. He claimed in doing so, Dr Boo had tarnished his reputation and humiliated him.
In the writ of summons filed last Thursday, Gwee said he decided to initiate legal action against Dr Boo as the articles had also portrayed him as immoral, had no integrity and not fit to carry out his responsibilities, and had also caused embarrassment to his family.
The writ of summons also stated that Dr Boo had to reply to the allegations within 14 days after receiving it.
Gwee, who was represented by K.M. Ong Lee and Co, was claiming for general compensation of RM3mil and RM2mil in excessive damages.
He also demanded that Dr Boo tender an unconditional apology in all the newspapers that had published the statements.
In one of the articles, Dr Boo had ticked off Gwee over the purchase of the Muar DAP service centre in July 2009, saying that the way Gwee handled the matter was questionable.
Dr Boo had also been reported to have said that the premises involved was for a bumiputra lot, which the property agent, who was a Singaporean, had sold to the party for RM300,000.
