BALIK PULAU - It will be a sad Hari Raya for three families because their houses in Kampung Baru, Sungai Ara near here were destroyed in a blaze.
The fire, which broke out at 11.20am yesterday, left the 21 residents with only the clothes on their backs.
A woman, in her 40s, fainted when she saw her rented unit razed.
Pantai Hospital Penang attendant Samsuri Abu, 50, said he could not save any of his belongings as he away was at work then.
"I thank God my family members, including my 90-year-old mother, ran out to safety," he said.
Another victim Abdul Aziz Abdul Mutalib was still in a shock when met after the incident.
"I reached home around 9am after completing my night shift. Then I went to sleep. I did not know how the fire broke out but I heard from neighbours that it could have started from my house," said the factory worker.
Bayan Baru fire station chief Rohizad Yusoff said a distress call was received at 11.24am.
"The houses were 90 per cent destroyed.We are still investigating the cause of the fire," he said, adding that there were no casualties reported.
Batu Maung assemblyman Datuk Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said the victims would be temporary housed at the Kampung Baru Community Development and Security Committee hall.
