He mistakes friend for animal, shoots him dead

A man accidentally shot dead his friend, whom he thought was an animal while hunting at the Kuala Gris estate in Kelantan last Thursday.

The victim, Mr Mohd Zulkifli Mat Isa, 48, from Kampung Paku Indah in Tanah Merah, had gone hunting with the shooter, a People's Volunteer Corps member (Rela) and another friend at about 6pm, reported the New Straits Times.

Forty minutes later, the Rela member saw something moving among the trees.

He opened fire, thinking it was an animal, said Kelantan Criminal Investigation Department chief, Assistant Commissioner Lai Yong Heng.

Mr Lai said the shots hit Mr Zulkifli in the head and body. The injured man was sent to a clinic nearby, aided by some villagers. He died an hour later.

Mr Lai said initial investigations showed that the trio were working at the same estate for the past few months.

"Zulkifli's body was sent to Kuala Krai Hospital for a post-mortem. We have detained the Rela member and his friend to facilitate investigations," said Mr Lai.

He added that the pair would be remanded until Thursday.
