PETALING JAYA - The Malaysian education ministry has ordered all schools in Kedah and Perlis to close on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the heatwave.

"It will be decided on Wednesday if schools will remain closed due to the extremely hot weather," minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid told reporters after being given an honorary PhD in Education by Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) in Petaling Jaya on Monday.

The minister was given the honorary doctorate for his contributions in the field of education.

He said schools are to close if temperatures exceed 39°C for three consecutive days.

Malaysia is now experiencing hot and dry weather caused by the El Nino phenomenon and the Malaysian Meteorological Department has predicted that the situation will only end in May or June.
