Highway turned into garbage dump

KUALA LUMPUR - Piles of rubbish were dumped indiscriminately on the side of the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) highway near the Taman Beringin rubbish transfer station after the station's main operator, Umpan Jaya Sdn Bhd, decided to stop operations abruptly.

A waste transfer station is a collection point for rubbish transferred there by lorries. The waste is then compacted before being stuffed into larger trucks to be transferred to the landfill, mainly 70km away to the Bukit Tagar landfill in Berjuntai Bestari, Selangor.

It was learnt that the company abandoned the station on Friday night. At the same time, it denied rubbish collection contractors entry to the station, forcing them to dump their load by the side of the MRR2.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) deputy director-general (Socio-economic Development) Datuk Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz confirmed the incident and said DBKL was caught off-guard by the company's abrupt exit.

"The company was unable to continue the management and they were supposed to hand over the management of the transfer station to DBKL at the end of next March.

"However, they left suddenly. We will take action against the operator," he said in a phone interview.

Excavators and Alam Flora contractors started cleaning the area at about 1pm yesterday. Earlier on, piles of rubbish were blocking parts of the MRR2's emergency lane.

Mohd Amin said Alam Flora will be tasked with managing and maintaining the transfer station for now.

"The transfer station will cease operations temporarily and all rubbish collection trucks will carry rubbish directly to Bukit Tagar.

"DBKL is also considering using the Semenyih and Tanjung Dua Belas landfill in Selangor as an alternative solution to address the problem," he said, adding that the reopening of the transfer station is expected to take at least a week's time.
