Home alone boy dies in fire at grandma's

KUALA PILAH - A 10-year-old boy who was left alone at his grandmother's house in Air Mawang in Johol near here died when the house caught fire.

Firemen found the charred remains of Mohamed Daniel Hakim in one of the rooms after the fire was brought under control.

The victim's father Mohd Ismail Abdul Hamid, 45, said his son had skipped school as he was recovering from a broken arm following a fall.

"We were supposed to remove the cast and a metal pin inserted into the arm tomorrow," said the distraught father when met at the Kuala Pilah Hospital mortuary.

The religious teacher said he was some 20km away at Felda Pasoh Tiga when he was told about the fire.

"My wife had left for work about 30 minutes before the fire broke out. My mother-in-law also had to go into town with my other children before my wife left," he said.

The victim was the seventh of nine children.

Tampin Fire and Rescue Department operations officer Lias Amat said the house had been razed when firemen arrived at the scene.

He said while firemen were busy trying to control the fire, a woman suddenly appeared and told them that her son was in the house.
