JOHOR BARU - Illegal immigrants were caught hiding in drains and between wooden planks during a raid conducted by the state Immigration Department near a construction site here.
Its assistant deputy director Gajengra Bahadur said the group was caught off guard when a team of 70 officers moved in and raided the compound at around 10am in Taman Larkin Perdana here on Tuesday.
"The group of foreign workers was busy working when the raid took place.
"Some of them tried to hide in drains and between the construction planks in an attempt to escape arrest", he said in a statement yesterday.
He said during the raid the officers managed to conduct checks on some 259 foreign workers from Indonesia, Myanmar and Bangladesh at the site.
From the total, some 98 illegal immigrants including seven Indonesian women, aged between 25 and 45, were detained for failure to produce valid documents.
"The detainees have been brought to the state Immigration headquarters for further investigation, he said.
