Instant millionaire in Malaysia donates $8,000
The sale of Malaysian ringgit far exceeded the buying at various money changers at Change Alley, after Mahathir's new measures on ringgit control were announced.

PETALING JAYA - A property consultant became an instant millionaire after winning a RM13.8-million (S$5.3-million) jackpot.

He donated RM20,000 of his winnings to Da Ma Cai's community chest.

While waiting to collect his prize, the man, in his 40s, found out that Da Ma Cai was a non-profit organisation that channelled its profits to vernacular schools through the chest.

Da Ma Cai said in a statement yesterday that the winner came from a vernacular school in a rural area and understood that schools in these areas needed assistance.

He found out about his windfall while on a holiday in Malacca with his family.

"When we returned, my wife and I were awestruck when we saw our numbers on the Da Ma Cai website."

The inspiration for the winning combination came from an accident that he saw in Malacca where the number plates of both cars had dropped off. He combined the numbers of the two cars to form the 1+3D Jackpot numbers.

He boxed one of the combinations "1661" and paired them with the straight number "6442".
