Ipoh councillor stabbed by robbers

IPOH - Local councillor Datuk Phoon Yoon Choy was stabbed by one of two men who attacked him as he was entering his car.

Phoon was leaving his office at 6pm when he was assaulted in Jalan Dato Seri Ahmad Said on Wednesday.

The Ipoh City councillor and Batu Gajah MCA division deputy chief was injured after being stabbed on the shoulder.

He said yesterday that he was on his way to a function in Menglembu when the men tried to snatch his workbag.

"Of course, I would not allow them to rob me without putting up a fight," Phoon said. "While I was struggling, one of them stabbed me below the left collar bone.

"I then tried to reach for a stick - which I keep in my car - to ward them off, but by then they had already fled in a Perodua Kancil," he said, adding that the suspects failed to take anything from him.

Phoon said he was bleeding profusely and was too weak to walk.

"I just sat on the road, waiting for someone to help me," he recalled.

"Fortunately, a mother and daughter happened to pass by and came to my aid, and for that, I am extremely grateful," said Phoon, who is in stable condition after undergoing surgery to stitch up his wound.

Phoon believes that his attackers may have been under the influence of drugs as "they seemed disoriented at the time of the attack".

Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Sum Chang Keong said police were checking footage from closed-circuit television cameras near the crime scene.
