MALAYSIA - A bride, who was detained midway through her Hindu wedding ceremony, claimed that she had applied for a petition to renounce Islam as she was underaged when her father converted her, reported Harian Metro.

The bride, Zarena Abdul Majid, 32, also claimed that she was a practising Hindu despite being registered at the National Registration Department as a Muslim.

The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) detained the bride and stopped the wedding held at a temple at Jalan SS1/25 in Shah Alam on Sunday.

The wedding was stopped before the marriage ritual took place.

It was reported that after the wedding was stopped, Zarena was taken to the Shah Alam Jais headquarters where her statement was recorded before she was released.

She claimed that her father, known as Mahendran, had married her illiterate mother S. Vasandamma. He later converted to Islam and used the name Abdul Majid without the family's knowledge.

Abdul Majid registered Zarena's birth and that of her brother's as Muslims and kept the documents. Zarena's brother is named Abdul Ghulam Salleh Khan a/l Abdul Majid.

Zarena claimed that her parents divorced 25 years ago and they had never kept in touch. As a result, both siblings are stuck with their Muslim names.

She claimed that she applied to change her religion on the MyKad seven years ago but this was denied as she did not have supporting documents from her father.
