Jewellery store spared huge losses - thanks to brave shoppers

KAJANG - A jewellery store in Cheras was spared an even bigger loss when shoppers bravely hurled objects at the three armed men who carted away its gold.

The drama in Batu 9 unfolded when the trio rushed into the store at a hypermarket after getting off the escalator to the first floor at noon on Sunday.

"One brandished an object resembling a pistol at an employee, while his two accomplices smashed a display case with a sledgehammer," OCPD Asst Comm Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said. "And, that triggered the security alarm."

The blaring sound alerted customers at the hypermarket who quickly grabbed bottles and other objects and flung them at the robbers.

"The burglars made off with only six white gold necklaces worth RM2,400 (S$902.46), but the losses could have been higher if not for the security alarm and swift public reaction," said ACP Ab Rashid.

"Closed circuit television (CCTV) footage showed the suspects fleeing in a silver Honda Stream. We are tracking them down."
