JOHOR BARU - Police have arrested nine men, including a Singaporean, for abducting two Indonesian men and demanding RM450,000 (S$152,097) in ransom for their release.
Johor police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Khalil Kader Mohd said the suspects aged between 20 and 43 were detained in Batu Pahat, Johor Baru and Muar on July 14.
He said they were caught following a police report lodged by the victims' friend.
The local man told police that one of the victims' wife had informed him that her husband was kidnapped.
"The wife told him that she had received call from one of the suspects that her husband was with them and demanded she pay them RM450,000," he said.
One the victims rescued by police in Batu Pahat had back injuries believed to be from hot water poured on him.
Comm Mohd Khalil said police seized RM36,000, a gun with 19 bullets as well as drugs. All the suspects also tested positive for drugs.
Investigations revealed that the suspects were involved in a drug syndicate that was active in Malaysia and Indonesia.
