The Umno supreme council should not take any drastic action at its meeting on Sept 9 by sacking or suspending the membership of deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin or vice-president Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.
Deputy permanent chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Aziz said such actions would only lead to disunity and weaken the party.
"I am not sure about the outcome of the Sept 9 meeting but the talk has been rife that these could happen.
"Anyway let me remind everyone that these two men were elected by 3.2 million Umno members and their fate cannot be decided by only 40 council members," he told reporters at a press conference at his office here in Nusajaya.
Expressing sadness over such issues that had affected the party, Mohamad, also Johor state assembly speaker, hoped that Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Muhyiddin would settle their differences and become friends again.
Muhyiddin was dropped as deputy prime minister in a Cabinet reshuffle last month over his comments on 1Malaysia Development Bhd.
