PETALING JAYA, Malaysia - Despite their opposing views especially on the implementation on hudud laws, PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang has expressed his condolences on the passing of Karpal Singh.
In a statement to PAS' organ Harakahdaily on Thursday, Hadi said the DAP stalwart was a courageous leader and never stopped fighting for justice.
"He was courageous and highly spirited in any matter he fought for.
"He was a father, a friend, a veteran politician and a lawyer who never stopped fighting for justice and the rule of law," he said.
Hadi hoped that the family and the entire DAP leadership to be patient in these testing times.
Karpal had been a vocal critic on the implementation of the Islamic penal code, calling it "unconstitutional" and that Malaysia should not be turned into an Islamic state.
Former MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has also expressed his deep sadness over Karpal's death. Karpal's persistence and perseverance in his extensive political career were appreciated and respected, he said.
"My heartfelt condolences go to the family," Dr Chua said in a statement on Thursday, adding that Karpal's demise was a profound loss to the nation.
The veteran DAP leader was killed when the car he was travelling in collided with a five-tonne lorry near Gua Tempurung on the North South Expressway on Thursday morning.
The impact of the crash at about 1am killed the prominent lawyer and his assistant, C Michael, on the spot.
Karpal's son, Ramkarpal, the car's driver, C Selvam and his Indonesian domestic helper were injured.
