GEORGE TOWN - The late Karpal Singh's driver, who was at the wheel in the fatal accident that killed the prominent lawyer and his personal assistant, is languishing behind bars after being charged with dangerous and reckless driving - and there is nothing Karpal's family can do about it.

C. Selvam could not post bail the RM5,000 (S$1,950) bail that the court set.

Karpal's third son, Ramkarpal Singh Deo, who was also in the car at that time, said they were also unable to post bail as they were potential witnesses.

"I have also been summoned to be the prosecution witness for the trial, so we cannot get involved in the case," he said when contacted yesterday

Ramkarpal, 38, was voted in as MP for Bukit Gelugor on May 25 after the seat fell vacant following Karpal's death on April 17.

An online news portal reported that Selvam, an Indian national, was charged in the Kampar Sessions Court on July 9 with dangerous and reckless driving.

He pleaded not guilty to committing the offence at KM306.1 of the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung in Kampar at 1.10am on April 17.

It was reported that Selvam, 27, had been remanded as he was unable to post bail.

The court has fixed Aug 8 for mention. The charge carries a jail term of up to five years or fine up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

Karpal, 74, and his assistant, Michael Cornelius, 39, died on the spot in the accident after their Toyota Alphard was involved in a collision with a lorry.

Selvam and Ramkarpal escaped with minor injuries. Karpal's Indonesian maid Selfiana Rengga, 26, was seriously injured. She was in a coma but later regained consciousness.
