KULAIJAYA - The Kulaijaya police have launched a special patrol unit consisting of only female police officers, the first in the state.
The unit is a pilot project and will start with its rounds in areas between Senai and Kelapa Sawit here, said Kulaijaya deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Mohad Idris Samsuri.
"Previously, we had a mixed group consisting of male and female officers but we thought that an all-female team would be more approachable, especially for women.
"An all-women patrol unit will be more appropriate when dealing with the elderly or children, as women generally have a softer approach," he said at a press conference after launching the unit at the district police headquarters here yesterday.
"The role of the unit is similar to any other patrol team but the only difference is that it will be working the morning shifts and will be placed in areas such as markets, where there is a higher number of women," said DSP Mohad Idris.
He added that each unit would have three female officers and they would work from 6am to 6pm in designated areas.
A total of 15 female officers have been selected to join the special unit.
