Labourer runs amok, slashes mother and brother with parang
Immediate attention: A fireman attending to the slash victims at their home in Taman Bukit Anggerik.

KUALA LUMPUR - A labourer ran amok and slashed his 82-year-old mother and brother with a parang at their home in Taman Bukit Anggerik here.

The man, in his 50s, slashed his mother and brother, who is also in his 50s, at about 3pm yesterday.

Cheras OCPD Senior Asst Comm Mohan Singh said police were investigating the cause of the incident. He added that the suspect was believed to be under the influence of drugs.

The police, he said, first received a call about a fire and an explosion at the home yesterday.

"Not long after that, we received information that a man was attacking the family," he said when contacted yesterday.

SAC Mohan said police arrived at the scene only to find the man had slashed his mother and brother. The man, he said, then locked himself in one of the rooms.

He added that police managed to arrest the suspect while the two victims were sent to the University Kebangsaan Malaysia Hospital. They are in stable condition.

A relative of the family described the man as someone with a quick temper. When met at HUKM, the relative said the suspect was once married and that he had two sons living in the same house. The relative said the suspect only took on odd jobs as a labourer.
