Umno must learn from the mistakes made in the 13th general election, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
"If we do things that are ineffective, the outcome will be like the last GE.
"We had programmes thinking that votes will increase but the outcome showed otherwise.
"Even I was cheated. There are places and programmes I attended where the turnout was 30,000 people. We thought those who came would vote for us, but at the end they didn't," he said when opening the Hulu Selangor Umno division meeting on Sunday.
Najib said Umno must also be realistic and not give him or party leaders the wrong impression about things and issues on the ground.
He said the Opposition was not free from problems but could survive because they supported their leaders.
"Even when the issue of the lost Omega, or that of a certain underwear came to light, the supporters of the opposition parties remained steadfast with their leaders.
"But if it's Umno leaders who are involved, we will be condemned. Worse still, we will be condemned even if it's not true. This is the scenario when we are tried by social media. It's a case of perception versus reality," he said.
Najib added that this is the reason issues and problems, as well as criticisms of the leadership, should only be raised among members behind closed doors.
"It is all right to question and criticise but in public, we must give an image that we are united," he said.
