MALACCA - The arm of a crane crashed into a lorry, killing the driver as he was waiting inside the vehicle at the rear of a shopping complex in Bandar Hilir.
Anas Tawi, 55, an Indonesian with permanent resident status, suffered serious head injuries and died on the spot in the 5.35am incident yesterday.
His colleague Sabari Bidin, 45, who was moving waste containers onto the lorry, was shocked when the crane arm crushed the vehicle.
"It happened so fast, I was dumbstruck. After recovering, I saw that Anas was crushed inside the wreck," he said at the scene later.
"I could not help him."
The crane was believed to have been lifting a generator to the complex roof for a cinema extension project when the accident happened.
Firemen extricated the body from the wreckage at 6.04am.
Anas, a lorry driver for more than 30 years, leaves a wife, as well as a daughter and three sons aged between 22 and 35.
Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Datuk Ismail Othman, who visited the scene, said work on the project was halted and would only resume after a review by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health and the Construction Industry Development Board.
The cause of the accident was still being investigated, he said.
