JOHOR BARU - A lorry driver who stopped his vehicle to help his friend who had a flat tyre was attacked by five men, leading to his death.

Mak Wai Sing, 53, had parked his heavy vehicle at the side of Jalan Ibrahim Sultan in Stulang when he went to help his friend change the tyre of his lorry.

However, five men who were angry because the lorry was obstructing their vehicles attacked both Mak and his friend.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Sulaiman Salleh said the men had earlier argued with Mak over the matter before attacking him and the unnamed friend in the early hours of Monday.

"We believe that following the argument, the men started to beat up Mak and his friend with their bare hands.

"The suspects fled the scene when the police arrived and the victims were rushed to the hospital," he said yesterday.

ACP Sulaiman said Mak suffered severe injuries to the head while his friend received only minor injuries.

"Despite doctors' efforts to save him, Mak died on Friday due to blunt trauma to the head," he said, adding that the victim could have hit his head hard on the road when he was beaten up.

ACP Sulaiman said the case has been classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

"We have detained a suspect believed to be one of the five men who had attacked Mak," he said.
