Malaysia MPs and Senators may get stipend raise

MPs and Senators will get a bigger allowance if the august House approves an amendment to the Members of Parliament (Remuneration) Act 1980.

The amendment, tabled yesterday by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, will be enforced from January next year if it gets the parliamentary "ayes".

The increase of the allowances, including for entertainment and travel, will see an extra cost of RM14.75 million (S$5.71 million) to the Government.

MPs and Senators will see their monthly allowance raised to RM7,000 from their current RM4,112.

In addition, the MPs will be given a monthly entertainment allowance of RM2,500, fuel allowance of RM1,500, toll allowance of RM300 and RM340 for each night spent overseas on official assignments.

Senators will be given a monthly entertainment allowance of RM2,000, fuel allowance of RM750, toll allowance of RM200, as well as RM340 for each night spent abroad for official visits.

The Speakers of the Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara will be given a new allowance of RM20,000, up from RM14,907.

Their deputies will receive RM16,000, an increase from RM10,847.
