Malaysia Sikh community lodges report over Facebook insult

KUALA LUMPUR - Members of the Sikh community here have lodged a report against a Facebook user for allegedly posting an offensive comment about Guru Nanak on the Friends of BN fan page.

Lawyer Gurmukh Singh said the comment was written in bad taste and disrespectful to Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism.

"We are a peaceful religion and live in harmony with other races and religions."

"But that does not give others permission to put us down," he added.

Gurmukh explained that the Facebook user, in the comment, made an offensive remark on Guru Nanak's hair and turban.

He said that the turban was a symbol of pride and dignity in the Sikh community.

"We wear our turbans like how kings would wear their crowns," he said after lodging the report at the Dang Wangi police station Thursday night.

Gurmukh said the Facebook comment was racist and uncalled for, and that the user should have not made such insensitive remarks.

"I hope the relevant authorities will take action against the culprit," he added.

Meanwhile, 29-year-old Mandeep Singh, who accompanied Gurmukh, said he felt angry reading the comment, but remembered to remain calm.

"Our guru has always advised us to be patient," he added.
