Malaysia transport minister: New set-up to handle cargo and freight forwarding

BENTONG - A special unit will be set up to coordinate the logistics chain to efficiently handle cargo and freight forwarding activities.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the unit would be placed under his ministry.

Currently, logistics activities involved various departments and agencies such as the Customs, International Trade and Industry Ministry and many others.

He added that the papers were being drafted and would be tabled to the Cabinet soon.

The new unit, Liow said, would handle all logistics-related matters including storage, transportation modes and the one-stop centre for Immigration and Customs documentation.

"This can shorten the processing period as well as reduce cost while enabling us to handle cargo more effectively and efficiently," he said, adding that the move was also to prepare the country as it moves towards e-commerce.

"E-commerce involves logistics and Malaysia is looking forward to tap further into this sector," Liow said.

He also said the government was in the midst of expanding and upgrading the Kuantan Port and would separate the wharf for container and passengers cruise vessels.

He said they were also looking into improving the air pollution problems at the port.

Earlier, Liow - who is also Bentong MP and MCA president - witnessed the handing over of tables and benches for SJK (T) Bentong by the Eco World Foundation.

The 13 fibreglass tables and 26 benches, worth RM20,000 (S$7,554), were for the canteen of the 35-year-old school.

Foundation chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the foundation made the donation after Liow expressed his concerns over the pupils' welfare and comfort.

"For the students' sake, we approved the fund for the school.

"Education is our core programme and the foundation has donated a total of RM203,600 worth of basic furniture such as desks and chairs to various schools since the setting up of the foundation last year," he added.

Earlier, Liow also officiated at a Chinese Calligraphy writing competition held in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations.

He also presented monetary contributions to some senior citizens at Kelab Burung Perting here.
