Malaysian killed in Shanghai stampede returns home today

PETALING JAYA - The body of Malaysian student Tan Wei who was killed in the New Year's Eve stampede in Shanghai, China, will be flown back today.

Tan's remains will be flown to the KL International Airport accompanied by her parents, and are expected to arrive in the evening.

A prayer and memorial service for her was held at the Shanghai Crematorium yesterday.

Tan, an agriculture resources and environment undergraduate at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, was among 36 people killed at Chen Yi Square on the Bund, Shanghai's most famous attraction.

Another Malaysian Ooi Hooi Yi, who was also injured in the incident, is recovering at Changzheng Hospital, said the Foreign Ministry in a statement where it also pledged to provide the necessary consular assistance for Tan's family.
