JOHOR BARU- Police have arrested 9,072 people statewide for various offences under Ops Cantas so far this year.
State police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said the suspects were arrested following checks on a total of 528,672 individuals and of those arrested, 3,496 have been charged in court.
"This was in accordance with the state police's efforts to combat crime and we will not stop there. We will continue to conduct operations and roadblocks statewide to comb out offenders," he said in a press conference here yesterday.
He also hoped that the arrests would be able to instil confidence in the people towards the police especially when information provided by members of the public lead to arrests.
SDCP Mohd Mokhtar said in the first five months, 305,000 vehicles were checked and 10 firearms of various makes were seized.
He added that 4,011 bullets and 24 fake weapons were also discovered, all believed to be used for illegal activities.
On a separate matter, the police chief said police arrested four men and seized a fake pistol in Taman Century here last Wednesday, believed to be part of a gang robbery syndicate.
He said the men, aged 21 and 30, were taken in when police stopped a car in Jalan Harimau and checks revealed that there was a fake pistol and a baseball bat hidden under the front passenger seat.
"One of the suspects has a criminal record and all four men are being remanded for investigation under Section 36(1) of the Firearms Act 1960, which provides for a year in jail or a fine of up to RM5,000 or both," he said.
