KOTA KINABALU - A man was sentenced to 20 years' jail and 10 strokes of the rotan for raping a neighbour's 13-year-old daughter who later gave birth.

Jikau Gani, 52, who was jailed 10 years for a similar offence in 2002, pleaded guilty to the charge before Sessions Court judge Azreena Aziz yesterday.

Jikau was also ordered to pay a compensation of RM10,000 to the now 14-year-old victim or spend another six months in jail.

He will be placed under police supervision for two years upon completing the sentence.

According to the facts of the case, Jikau raped the girl in a room at a house in Kuala Penyu district, about 105km from here, at 12.30pm in May last year.

The girl screamed for help but there was no one around to rescue her.

The incident came to light on Sept 6, 2016, after the girl complained to her parents of stomach pains. They brought her to a clinic where her pregnancy was revealed.

She then admitted to being raped several months earlier.

The girl gave birth on Jan 24 this year, and a DNA test confirmed that Jikau is the biological father.

Jikau, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency.

However, DPP Husna Abdul Halim urged for a deterrent sentence on the grounds that Jikau had not only committed a heinous crime, he was also not remorseful.

She said Jikau was convicted for a similar crime previously, and the fact that he had committed the same offence showed that he was prone to carrying out such heinous acts again.
