Man drowns after Proton Wira plunges into river

BUKIT MERTAJAM - A man drowned after his car plunged into a river near Jalan Bukit Minyak here.

The 37-year-old victim was believed to have lost control of his Proton Wira before it landed in the river on Thursday morning.

A spokesman from the Fire and Rescue Department said firemen arrived at the scene at 8.45am after receiving a call from the public when the vehicle was spotted.

"Eight firemen managed to remove the man from his car and he was pronounced dead by a medical officer at the scene," said the spokesman.

The body was then handed over to police and sent to the Bukit Mertajam hospital for a post-mortem.

Police are investigating the incident.
