A 76-year-old man was found hanged the day his house was about to be pulled down by the landowner, Guang Ming Daily reported.

Toh Zi Mei's body was found by his son in the storeroom of the house in Chu Ward new village, Negri Sembilan, at about 7am on Thursday.

Toh's wife Kwan Siew Qiong, 72, said he had been depressed after receiving news that their house would be demolished.

"He was worried that he might be homeless," she said.

Kwan said her husband was crying on Wednesday night and she believed her husband hanged himself during the early hours of Thursday.

Chu Ward, located in Bahau, has 40 houses but only about 20 are occupied.

The landowner had recently obtained a court order to get back the land and the villagers were told to vacate their houses for demolition work to be carried out.

The landowner has since postponed the demolition by a week for Toh's funeral.
