KUALA LUMPUR - A jobless man was sentenced to a day's jail and fined RM1,500 by a magistrate's court for stealing several items, including chocolates and shampoo, worth RM371.
Tan Choon Seng, 36, pleaded guilty to stealing the items from a hypermarket here on April 26.
He was caught by a security guard when attempting to leave with the stolen items after the alarm went off.
The items stolen were a shaving set, four bottles of Dettol, 20 packs of Cadbury chocolate, five bottles of Dove shampoo, five bottles of Pantene shampoo and two men's T-shirts.
Tan, who was dressed in a red T-shirt and blue jeans, also had a list of previous offences which were read out to him by magistrate Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin.
"You had a robbery case in 2002, for which you were punished. You had a drug offence in 2005, for which you were punished and in 2013, you had drug offences for which you were also punished. Correct?" asked the magistrate.
To this, Tan nodded and replied: "Right. I regret doing this.
"Please give me a light punishment," he pleaded.
Prosecuting officer Insp Zuraimi Kamarozzaman asked for a sentence that would serve as a lesson to Tan.
