KOTA KINABALU - A 45-year-old man is feared dead after being attacked by a crocodile while swimming across Sungai Lung Payau.

Zainal Lulung was searching for clams with his wife along the riverbank, not far from the Kinabatangan town area, when he decided to swim across.

Authorities said his wife saw a reptile, believed to be a crocodile, pulling Zainal into the water at about 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Kinabatangan fire station chief Rosemidian Majid said it received a distress call at 7.56pm and deployed a search and rescue team.

"Zainal was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, short pants and a pair of rubber shoes," he said.

The search and rescue operation was halted at about 11.30pm and resumed yesterday morning.
