Man sets houses on fire after wife refuses to open door for him

PORT KLANG, Malaysia - Angry at his wife for not opening the door to the house for him, an intoxicated man proceeded to set his house door on fire - and ended up burning six other houses.

The insurance agent, described as being in his 30s, is alleged to have flown into a rage after his wife locked him out of their Panda­maran home in the 12.30am incident yesterday.

Neighbours claimed that the man then doused the front door of his rented house with petrol before setting it alight, but the fire spread quickly as there was a steady breeze at the time of the incident.

Apart from the seven houses, which were completely destroyed, four more houses suffered partial damage.

Klang South police chief Asst Comm Kamarul Zaman Mamat said that the case was being investigated for mischief by fire with intent to destroy.

Neighbours also said the couple often fought and the man had attacked his wife with a parang in February.

It is believed that no police report had been lodged by the housewife over the February incident.

The man has been arrested but was subsequently admitted to the Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah in Klang where he is being treated for injuries sustained after he was beaten up by enraged neighbours.

It took four fire engines and a water tanker to bring the fire under control.

Port Klang fire station chief Abdullah Mohd Salleh said the houses were razed to the ground.

"Most of the houses were built from wood," he said.
