Mechanic blinded in acid attack

MALAYSIA - A mechanic was blinded in both eyes when a stranger threw acid at him before escaping on a motorcycle, reported Berita Harian.

The man, wearing a helmet, had approached Wong Sin Yew, 57, while he was fixing a lawn mower in the corridor of the workshop.

Wong also suffered serious injuries to his face, body, hands and legs in the 1.30pm incident on Saturday at Miri.

His daughter, who declined to be named, said Wong’s disfigurement was so extensive that family members did not recognise him initially.

“He told me the suspect might have gotten the wrong man as he seemed hesitant in throwing the acid at my father,” said the woman in her 30s.

She said she did not know the motive of the attack but stressed that her father did not have problems with anyone, or owed anyone money.

She added that his chances of regaining his sight were slim as doctors had found major nerve damage.

Miri Deputy OCPD Supt Stanley Jonathon Ringgit said the victim was under close medical supervision due to his injuries.

“We believe the suspect is in his 30s and he escaped on a motorcycle. The motive of the attack is also being investigated,” he said.
