Minister to Malaysians: Show that tragedies won't hit our spirit

PUTRAJAYA - Malaysians should come out in full force on Sunday to attend the Merdeka Day parade to show the world that their spirit remains undefeated despite two recent air tragedies.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the celebration was an opportunity for the people to demonstrate their perseverance.

The people, he said, must show to the world that although Malaysia was a small country, its citizens had a big heart.

"The two tragedies may have, to a certain extent, hit our spirit and we walked with our heads down, not knowing whether we could recover.

"But if we all can come out in full force this Sunday, we can show the world how strong and united we are.

"By coming out in force, we are also showing our support to the families of the victims in both tragedies and in seeking justice for them," he said here yesterday.

Ahmad Shabery, who is the Merdeka Day celebrations organising committee chairman, said all efforts had been taken to ensure the smooth running of the event.

He also urged shopping complexes to play patriotic songs to help create the Merdeka mood among patrons.
