Ministry ticked off over $119,000 study tour

MALAYSIA - The Auditor-General's Report 2012 has described the cost of a four-day study tour made by an Information, Communications and Culture Ministry official to Geneva, Switzerland, as unreasonable.

"The cost of the study tour amounted to RM303,813 (S$119,000)," it said.

It also found that about 32% of the total emergency calls to the 999 Malaysian Emergency Response Services (MERS) were left unanswered.

The report said there were 23.6 million emergency calls from January to August last year.

Of the total, 67.6% or 15.95 million calls were answered by operators.

The report also said that the quality of service in answering emergency calls handled by Telekom Malaysia Bhd was not satisfactory "because there were still 7.65 million calls that were unanswered".

The report said the MERS 999 project's aim to eliminate dropped or unanswered calls had yet to be achieved.
