JOHOR BARU - More people in the city here are turning to online shopping for bouquets, says a flower distribution company executive.

Maple Flora Enterprise managing director Isaac Lim said there had been a steady increase of at least 30 per cent yearly for online orders, especially during occasions such as Mother's Day.

"Over 60 per cent of our sales are from online orders and there has been a sharp drop in walk-in customers since we launched a web page three years ago," he said when met at his outlet along Jalan Badik 1 here.

Lim added that he had to import additional carnations from China, almost 20 per cent more than usual, to meet the demand here for Mother's Day celebrations this year.

"Carnations have always been a favourite for Mother's Day. But this time more customers wanted imported carnations as the blooms are much bigger and prettier than the local ones," he said.

Judy Florists owner, who wanted to be known only as Yeo, said he was expecting some 5,000 orders in conjunction with Mother's Day this weekend.

"We have achieved more than 20 per cent of the targeted sales this year," he said, adding that three extra helpers were hired to fulfil the rising demand.

He added that while online flower purchases seemed to be the trend now, a few customers preferred to drop by the shop to pick out the flowers themselves.

A check by The Star showed that the average price for hand bouquets for Mother's Day ranged from as low as RM10 (S$3.85) to RM250 each, depending on the type of flowers and the number of stalks in the package.

The bouquets also included cakes, chocolates and even health products.

Many florists in the city also provided worldwide delivery services and charges are based on the delivery destination.
