PUTRAJAYA - The cost of sending home illegal immigrants detained in the upcoming nationwide crackdown will be borne by their respective countries of origin through government-appointed companies.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Government decided to outsource the final part of the deportation process to reduce the detention period.
"The companies are collaborating with the embassies and high commissions in relation to the cost. I think through this arrangement, the maximum length of detention will be reduced to only a few days," he said here yesterday.
Dr Ahmad Zahid said that once arrested, the illegals would be handed to the companies who would make the necessary arrangements to send them back to their countries of origin.
He added that he had discussed the matter with government representatives of several countries.
"For instance, I have discussed the matter with the Indonesian minister in charge of employment and the Bangladesh minister for expatriates and they agree with our efforts.
"We want to deport the illegals as quickly as possible to avoid overcrowding the detention centres," he said.
