KUALA LUMPUR - The organisers of the Mrs Universe 2014 World Finals have called for tolerance from those who do not agree that the event be held here.
Sogo (KL) Department Store Sdn Bhd said the beauty pageant for married women would not have any swimwear round in the finals or in any of its activities.
"All delegates will be required to be decently dressed throughout the event," the company said in a statement here yesterday, adding that the position of Islam and the rights of its followers were protected.
"In cases where the issue of morality and religion is brought up, there is no provision for one religious group to impose its values upon another, as this would lead to disharmony and contradict the freedom to practise one's own faith as guaranteed by the Constitution," the statement said.
The event is scheduled to take place here on Aug 29 and said to be endorsed and supported by the Tourism and Culture Ministry as part of the Visit Malaysia Year programme.
PAS leaders and bloggers had reportedly said such an event cannot be held in a Muslim-majority country and that it would be an insult to Islam and to Muslims if it was held in Malaysia.
KL Sogo said the international event was aimed at honouring married women who had achieved success in life and those who contributed to humanitarian causes, especially in the prevention of violence against women.
"We would like to therefore clear the controversy surrounding the issue and give our assurance that the event will comply with every regulation and by-law as required by local authorities."
KL Sogo managing director Datuk Andrew TK Lim said it was the first time the pageant was being held in Asia and Malaysia had been given the honour of hosting it as last year's winner, Carol Lee, was a Malaysian.
