KLANG, Malaysia - A 52-year-old woman has to pick up the pieces after three of her family members were killed in a fire which razed her house.
Cheong Chai Fong, who runs a shop selling processed coconut milk here, has been coaxed by her daughter Goh Mei Leng, 30, to quit the business temporarily and move to Kuala Lumpur to stay with another daughter.
Cheong's husband Goh Meng Huat, 70, their daughter Sim Yen, 33, and her seven-year-old son Tan Jia Wai perished in the blaze.
"My mother's life turned empty overnight with her husband of 34 years gone," said Mei Leng.
Selangor MCA has also promised to give a helping hand in the aftermath of Friday's fire at Kampung Teluk Rhu in Sabak Bernam.
"We are all devastated," said Mei Leng, adding that her mother had been advised to take some time off from her work.
On that fateful day, Sim Yen managed to phone Cheong, who was away at her shop nearby, screaming that they were trapped inside the blazing semi-wooden house.
Sim Yen left behind a husband and two children, daughter Tan Wan Xin, 15, and son, Tan Ka Hao, 13, who are both studying in Teluk Intan.
A prayer ceremony was held yesterday before the corteges left for cremation.
Hundreds of people came to bid their final farewell at the funeral.
Sabak Bernam MCA chairman Datuk George Kee Ah Kau promised the division would help the family.
"We'll discuss with the village head, state assemblyman and the MP to help the family get aid from the Welfare Department, inclu¬ding allocations to rebuild the house," Kee said.
He said he had visited the family on behalf of Selangor MCA and presented Wan Xin with a RM1,000 cheque.
