SEGAMAT - A huge mural depicting an elderly man indulging in durian has become an attraction, here, drawing people to pose for photos with the artwork in the background.

The 30m tall and 16m wide mural on a hotel building along Jalan Syed Abdul Kadir, in Segamat town, was painted by local art teacher Ng Poh Yong last December.

The 39-year-old said it took her almost two weeks to complete the project, which was requested by the hotel owner.

"The owner came to me with the idea for a durian-inspired mural and I took up the offer and personally designed it.

"Segamat is famous for its durians and there are quite a few durian farms here, which is why the theme was chosen," she said.

Ng, who has been an art teacher for the past 20 years, said the mural received a lot of attention and she was commissioned by the hotelier to do another durian-inspired mural.

"The second mural, just below the first one, shows a trader selling Musang King durian and with children sitting nearby," she said adding that this mural was not finished yet.

A family from Jementah, which is about 20km away from Segamat, was seen admiring the artwork and snapping photos.

Housewife Angel Yew, 29, said the huge mural caught her eye whenever she visited Segamat.

"I have taken photos of the 'uncle' eating the durian earlier, so today, my kids wanted to snap pictures with the new one," she said adding that photos of the mural was also being shared on Facebook.
