MALACCA: A student from a prestigious university in Kuala Lumpur is claiming that three of his fellow university mates have gone to Syria to join the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group.
The 22-year-old student, who hails from Sungai Petani, Kedah, lodged a report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
He said he was also approached via social media to join IS.
"Video footage of the so-called struggle by IS martyrs in Syria was posted on my Facebook page and my friends, who are there in Syria, are always asking me to join them," he said.
He said he first met the group of students in 2012 and that they constantly talked about championing the rights of people who were being oppressed in other countries.
He added that three of the students left for Syria to join the IS militants last year.
The student, who asked for anonymity, said he now felt embarrassed, especially since his Facebook page had also been tagged by his former friends in Syria.
"I also cannot focus on my studies because of their constant pleas for me to join them there," he said.
"I have even stopped answering calls on my handphone because some of them have been calling me despite me telling them not to do so and that they are on the wrong track."
Police have launched a probe into the matter.
