PETALING JAYA: The confirmation by Saudi Arabia's foreign minister that the donation to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak came from Saudi Arabia is proof that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's allegations are false, said Najib's press secretary.

Datuk Seri Tengku Sariffuddin Tengku Ahmad said that the statement by Adel Al -Jubeir confirmed what Najib had maintained all along.

"This also proves that the wild allegations pushed for one year by Tun Mahathir Mohamad and his Anti-Najib Campaign are completely false.

"Tun Mahathir's lies were motivated by personal interest, not care for Malaysia or the people," he said, in a statement on Friday.

He added that Dr Mahathir was attempting to use deception to unseat a democratically elected government and that he should be held responsible for the damage he has inflicted on Malaysia's reputation.

Tengku Sariffuddin also called for Western media outlets, which he said propagated "false politically-motivated allegations", to apologise to the Malaysian people.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Azalina Othman also released a statement on Friday, saying that Al-Jubeir's confirmation was just another piece of evidence that proved Najib was not involved in any wrongdoing.

This evidence, she said, included the letter from a Saudi royal reproduced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) confirming the donation as well as the conclusions reached by the Attorney-General and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).

"So who has been lying this whole time?

"I believe this is issue is becoming increasingly clear to the public and they will not be easily fooled by false allegations made by the Citizens' Declaration group in order to oust the prime minister," said Azalina.

On Thursday, Al-Jubeir had confirmed that the donation to Najib came from Saudi Arabia and that nothing was expected in return for it.

He added that as far as the Saudis were concerned, the case was closed.
